At K9 Metropolitan Specialists Malaysia, we are proud to support the ongoing fight against knife crime through the outstanding work of our UK branch, K9 Metropolitan Specialists UK. Recently, one of our UK team members, Andy Lightfoot, was featured in a BBC News segment showcasing a major advancement in public safety: training detection dogs to sniff out concealed knives.
Andy, who also serves as the lead trainer with Knife Detection Dogs UK, the organisation leading this important initiative, spoke about how specially trained dogs are being deployed to detect the chemical scent left on handled or hidden knives. This innovative method provides a powerful, non-intrusive tool for identifying weapons before they can be used.
> “These dogs are changing the way we think about proactive security,” Andy explained in his interview. “They are trained to detect specific scents linked to knives, giving us the ability to intervene early and prevent harm.”
The programme uses reward-based, ethical training methods to ensure the dogs remain calm, accurate, and reliable in crowded public environments. Their work is already making an impact in high-risk areas such as transport hubs, schools, city centres, and large-scale events, where the presence of detection dogs not only enhances security but also acts as a strong deterrent.
This will be a collaborative effort between Knife Detection Dogs UK, K9 Metropolitan Specialists UK, police forces, and private sector security teams, all working toward the same goal: to reduce knife-related violence and keep the public safe.
At K9 Metropolitan Specialists Malaysia, we are inspired by the work of our UK team and proud to stand alongside them in this international mission. Their progress is a reflection of our shared values: excellence in canine training, innovation in detection capabilities, and unwavering commitment to public safety.
